Weekly Software News 20th to 27th April 2014

Wow, ten new releases in a single week, and another 10 updates? That’s one of the most active weeks in the recent History. And this has nothing to do with the alignment of stars or planets, but a lot of it is driven by the fact that PtitSeb was on vacation and therefore had more free time to spend compiling stuff with the Pandora! Well done to him as well as all the other contributors in this week!

If last week was relatively quiet in terms of new releases, this week makes up for it, with 7 new entries. PtitSeb has been making steady progress with Glshim together with Lunixbochs, and as a result a number of OpenGL games make it to the Pandora in the same week. Very impressive to see the car simulator TORCS running on a handheld, for example, while you should not expect high frame rates.

My Day with The Pandora (Ziz)

I got my Pandora much later than most other active users of the Open Pandora board. So I own it just since two months™. But since then it became a central point of my dayly life and I won’t miss it anymore. I were an active member of the open Pandora board even without the device because of the great community. It made fun to develop stuff for them even without Pandora. Because of this I already knew some use cases of the device, but I was surprised for what different things else the Pandora is useful for.

Enjoy High Resolution Using DisplayLink with your Pandora

DisplayLink is a USB2 solution to send display data from a USB source to a digital monitor (using a DVI interface). Why would you care ? Well, the Pandora has a USB2 port, and can support higher resolutions, therefore it can act as a display source and connect on a monitor to display a Full HD desktop. Don’t except stuff like playing games or videos with it, though, since the bandwidth of the USB2 port is too narrow to stream full HD video in realtime. But since the Pandora is very much a portable computer, you can enjoy the richness of its desktop applications (LibreOffice, Quassel, Firefox, etc…) with this device. Here’s how you set it up.

Yo guys. You may have been wondering why there were so few updates on PandoraLive in the past week. Well, two reasons. One, I was not feeling very well, and had to sleep early several days to get better (getting there…), and two, I’m moving to a different place soon so I have been busy with packing and fun stuff like that. Looks like I was not the only busy one around, since this was a relatively quiet week on the Repo.

MPS, A New Tool To Stream Music!

mps

MPS is a new tool I have discovered a couple of weeks ago, that one can use to stream (and download) Music from online sources (apparently coming from Pleer.com) similar to what you can do with Grooveshark already. The difference is that MPS is a command line tool, and therefore you don’t need to load a heavy browser in memory to actually start playing music with your Pandora. And just for that, it’s a great solution. Plus, it’s extremely simple to use, even if you hate the command line. But it can also do a whole lot more.
